Hi there  mark,

Your site is very good and informative.

These birds have only been in Australia for about three years and I have been given a pair of squeakers. they seem very jittery in the loft and don't like to be handled I have been hand feeding them as they wont eat by them selves yet. I keep Doneks mostly. I hope these birds fly like you say, as we had Danzig highfliers a few years ago. They were bricks - nice looking and expensive, but did not fly. You seem to be having success with the birds you have. It is hard to get good birds that perform how we want but will give them every opportunity to perform any way that's it for me. If you answer this email I may ask you some questions in the future.............Brian

Well Hi mark,

Its good to get some replies from some of the sites I have sent email to. Well the birds have settled in quite well they are eating ok now and have settled down fine.  I have given them plenty of attention in the week I have had them .

These birds were brought into Australia by the VICTORIAN HIGH FLYING PIGEON CLUB of which I was a founding member, but I am not involved any more! The club also got in some Danzig highfliers and Gravoony. They arrived about 3 years ago, and  they came from Germany, I am told (legally) its a hard job through our customs.

Flying Oriental Rollers sell for about $160 to $300 dollars a pair and more, but there are not many of us with them. Could you tell me what they cost over there? The ones I got are white with red splashes // I have only seen solid Black and Red (self) and only know of 4 people with them .I will be looking for a black to put with one of these and see what we can get from them.  I haven't seen them fly as yet so that is a worry!

I will take some photos of the birds soon and send them to you I will also find out who these OR's came from. I think it was from Germany. My birds look just like the pic's you sent me, but they are white with red print.

Most people here, in Melbourne Victoria, are into keeping the birds in the air  I don't like the idea of just birds looking good , I like them to fly, showing is not an interest to me but each to his own I guess. I don't know anyone who is flying OR's but I will be soon as I get something to breed with, the young will be in the air!

By for now, Brian

Hi Mark,

My name is Norm Smith and I live in North Sydney Nova Scotia Canada. I am retired and just got back into the fancy last year. The last time I had birds was when I was a teenager. That's 45 yrs. ago. Since getting back into the birds I realize that I am the dumbest son of a gun in the fancy. I have read Levi's book's and they help but a lot is out dated. I am Isolated here on the far eastern coast of Canada and do not have access to other fanciers that are close enough to help guide me in the ;right direction regarding pigeon health. I have asked so many fanciers so many questions and got so many different answers that I get totally confused.( I don't know if that is due to my age or stupidity) However I read your article in the Pigeon Debut on Pigeon Health and it makes all kinds of sense.

I started using the garlic powder over 2 weeks ago and I can honestly see; an improvement in the birds. Is it normal to have a powder residue; buildup in the food trays from using the garlic powder? I wash and disinfect the trays once a week. I want to try the Apple Cider Vinegar. Approximately how much do you add to the water? Possibly 1 tsp. per gal.? What are electrolytes? I know what they are but I am not sure; what you mean. I hate taking any drugs myself and also to administer same to anyone or unless it is absolutely necessary so I totally agree with you. Hopefully Mark you will find the time to answer my questions. This old guy would sincerely appreciate it. By the way I raise Old German Shield Owls Clean Leg Ice Pigeons and Archangels in three colors.

Very best regards to you both!

Norm

Dear Mark & Dora,

I am e-mailing you from the state of DE. (a long way from Texas). I would like to get my hands on several pairs of quality performing Flying Oriental Rollers. I can only locate breeders of show type on the east coast. can you hook me up with someone? or could you ship some birds to me? getting back into birds after flying homers as a boy scout forty years ago. I started with homers and rollers poor performers) last year. I love the Oriental breed and the same colors you do!

I have enjoyed your newsletters---can you help me?

Thanks, Stephen

Hi Mark

Last time I wrote I was inquiring about pairs of solid colors. I have subsequently studied the bird photographs on your Website: your photographs are really well done. I definitely want to order two pairs from you as soon as we can work out the details. I would like to know what types of pairs you have in addition to the self's. The birds that I find very appealing are:Almond2000.jpg model. jpg Gray-Almond_O_R_jpg. and 20002 jpg. Do you have any pairs that correspond to these photos. They certainly do not have to be matched identical color distribution of plumage.

Once we can work out which birds can be purchased I will need the cost for shipping including the box and an address for sending the money order . I live in Southwestern North Dakota -Dickinson if that will aid you in your calculations. If I wait to much longer to order the birds it might be too cold to have them shipped although I have no idea if that is true. I hope to hear from you soon.

Mark,

My name is Bowen Brown I saw your website and I am interested in the oriental rollers. I live in Tucson AZ. and I currently raise Modena's. IM thinking of getting into a new breed the Modena's are just to hard to breed as a beginner. I also have show tipplers which I like a lot and IM thinking of having just two breeds (a flying breed and a show breed). I think I going to use my tipplers as my show breed. The reason behind me writing is I was interested in getting some more information on the O.R.'s. they seem to be an interesting breed. If you could do this I would appreciate it a lot!

Thank you,  Bowen Brown

Hello Mark & Dora,

Hi I live in Kansas and am trying to find people living in my area with roller pigeons. I just retired and have plenty of free time when my wife isn't home. Can anyone help me. You have a wonderful website and the best I have seen so far.

Thank you very much..  A.L Bowen

Mark,

I recently purchased some Orientals from a breeder in California (J.P. Isom). He told me they were flying birds. Well when they arrived I took one look at them and knew there was no way these were the flying type. They are too large and too heavy and seem to have a hard enough time making it to the perch much less rolling.

I am wanting information on breeders that would sell me some quality flying birds and not the show stuff like what I currently have. It is sad in life that we sometimes have to learn our lessons the hard way like I did!  paying a hefty price for something I didn't ask for

I had Orientals as a kid and enjoyed there unique personalities. It seems there are very few breeds that give off the air of pride and friendliness these birds do. I appreciate any assistance you could provide me.

Thanks in advance  Jay Yandle Thomasville NC

Mark Dora,

I thoroughly enjoyed your web site! Nice layout. I especially enjoyed the pictures of your Oriental Rollers even though I raise Chinese owls. I have been trying for the past 3-4 years to improve the quality and color of my recessive red and yellow owls and have made significant strides. However after seeing your recessive red and yellow rollers I realize that I have a long way to go with the color! What's your secret to getting such deep rich color?

My wife and I moved from San Antonio to Phoenix about 4 years ago. wish I would have known you were there when we were!

Hi Mr. Orme,

How are you? The pigeons arrived early last week. They made the trip fine and look beautiful. Will keep in contact and let you know how they are doing. I also enjoy reading your newsletters.

Thanks very much. C.O.Johnson

Hello Mark & Dora,

I'm emailing to see if you have any Flying Oriental Rollers for sale. I'm looking for 3 or 4 pairs or some young birds to make up a kit. The birds are for my daughter Lisa, She's 9 years old and loves pigeons! We have some flights and a pair of Syrian tumblers right now. We have had Birmingham Rollers in the past, but every time we flew them the Coopers hawks had an easy meal.

We went through about 100 rollers until we gave up on them. The flights and the Syrians are fast enough to get away. We like the performing birds the best and after reading your web page, Lisa wants to try some Orientals. I'm going to build another loft in a few weeks and I'm going to copy your design. I'm going to add a removable front and sides to use in the winter. I agree with you 100% on having a well ventilated loft. Well,  I've taken up enough of your time. If you don't have any birds available, I would appreciate it if you could give me the names of anyone else you may think might have them.

Thanks very much for your time and have a good day.

Nick and Lisa
